Ayrton Senna kicks ass: 1993

In Formula 1, wet weather racing is considered to be the great equaliser of cars; that is, the driver makes more of a difference. Speeds must be reduced and car superiority in power or grip is greatly reduced. The rain demands great driver car control, ability and driving finesse. Senna had some of his best performances in such conditions. One of his tactics was not to change into the rain tyres at the start of the rain but to keep racing using slick tyres. Although it made racing much more difficult Senna, the sneaky bugger, often gained several seconds of time ahead of his competitors because most of them were driving into the pitstop to change tyres.

The 1984 season was Senna's first in F1. He came into a field of competitors from whose ranks 16 world championships would be reaped. Participating as a rookie in a relatively crap car, the Toleman TG184, Senna had racked up three race retirements, a 6th and a 7th place from his first 5 races. He started the first wet race of the season, the Monaco Grand Prix in 13th place. The race was stopped for safety reasons after only 31 laps due to monsoon conditions. At the time the race was stopped, Senna was classified in 2nd place, and catching up to race leader Alain Prost, at 4 seconds per lap. Senna's performance in this race, on a track on which it is notoriously difficult to pass other competitors, should be contrasted with the events of recent races at Monaco in which passing has been the exception rather than the norm, especially in dry conditions.

In 1993, at the European GP at Donington Park, Senna drove for the McLaren team. The MP4/8, although one of the front running cars, was considered inferior to the leading Williams FW15C of Prost and Hill, and the Benetton B193 (which used a factory-supplied Ford engine) driven by Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese. Some maintain that the Williams FW14B and FW15C were probably the most technologically advanced cars that will ever race in Formula One. This didn't matter much to Senna in this race.

Careful lad, or someone might end up hurt

He started in fourth place on the grid. At the very start, Hill cut across Schumacher's line, causing Schumacher to cut further to the outside across Senna's own line. Karl Wendlinger's Sauber then passed both Schumacher and Senna on the inside, leaving Senna in fifth and Schumacher in fourth. Senna cut to the inside, having no room to move to the outside as Schumacher came across. Despite being in fifth place at that point, at the end of the first lap he was in first place, having overtaken Schumacher, Wendlinger, Hill and Prost. Examples of wet weather car control such as this gained Senna the title "The Rain Master" in numerous F1 publications in the early 90s. The opening lap is frequently cited as a one of the sport's great moments. Senna is regarded by many as the fastest driver that has ever been involved in Formula One Motor Racing and was also rated by a 2006 F1 magazine poll to be the greatest Formula One driver of all time.

An early entry in the race for the greatest ever tattoo is this beauty. It's so real it's bloody scary:

How to survive in prison

Question:What do you do if you end up in prison?

The following advice could well end up saving your life.

Learn the Hierarchy

Prison is the most base of all hierarchical systems that currently exist in the world. There are the “haves” and the “have-nots”, the governors and the slaves, and the predators and the prey. Each “person” in this society has a role and a responsibility. The stake of failure to deliver on responsibilities is often violence in the form of mutilation, humiliation and even death. In a perfectly managed environment, surviving in prison would be simple. All you would have to do is obey the rules and do the time. Separation from loved ones and society would be the only punishment imposed. Unfortunately, this is a far cry from the real world. In the real world, the brutalization that comes along with that separation is the true punishment and deterrence against future criminal behavior.

Keep your head

Most important to surviving prison, as is true with any survival situation, is to keep your 'head in the game'. A strong mindset will allow you to deal with the tragedy of the situation and better adapt to the constantly changing atmosphere. Unless someone is doing a life sentence, and therefore knows they're going to die in prison, it's important to keep in mind that this is a temporary situation. At some point you will need to be able to reacclimatize to society. It's necessary to be able to separate 'prison life' from 'real life'. What happens in prison often stays in prison.

Find a Niche

Another survival strategy for prison is to find a niche. Being able to do something or provide a service that few if any others can lead to a positive end. In such a caste system, the one who is valued is less likely to be subjected to violence and may even find themselves protected. It is worth having a skill or a trait that keeps you slightly above the rest, without making a major show of it.

Find a Gang

Moving onto the baser strategies for surviving prison, the most common is to join a gang. Prison gangs offer a high level of protection and the means for retaliation against others. Most prison gang members do not continue their affiliation after their term is up, but it must be stated that others do. Those 'left behind' in prison are going to expect a certain level of loyalty even after a fellow gang member is released. This can radically change your life after prison and the risk versus reward of this survival strategy should be thoroughly examined.

Get Real Currency

Another important strategy for surviving prison is the exchanging of vices. It is often stated that cigarettes are currency in prison, but the same can be said for illicit drugs and sexual favors. Getting into one of these trades may be the easiest way to walk back out of prison with your life intact, but perhaps not your dignity. This is, however, a survival situation after all. You need to determine what is best for you. If you have a knack for a particular vice, then it may be the simplest way to avoid conflict and violence.

Natural Selection

Prison is not civilized society. No matter how many sociologists attempt to change life “behind bars”, the fact remains that this is a primitive and cruel environment. You can't expect to take the worst aspects of society, put them all together, and expect them to play nice. Prison is the modern equivalent of Darwin’s Theory of natural Selection. It truly is survival of the fittest, never the less, here are ten good tings to avoid doing if you want to get by:

1. Do not get involved with punks

I am not talking about the spiked hair variety - I am talking about guys who become other guys’ 'girlfriends' - usually for protection. While the short term benefits may be appealing (protection from other prisoners), you can become a virtual slave, to be gambled or sold to other inmates and you will definitely be used and abused. This is less appealing.

Falling into this category also includes being taken under someone’s wing - it will almost certainly lead to you being a rape victim. People who offer this kind of help are either looking for a punk, or are looking for someone to pimp out. You should not associate with anyone involved with punks either. Jealousy in prison can and does lead to murder.

2. Do not discuss your crime

This rule applies especially in cases of sexual crimes. Prisoners doing time for these types of crimes are the biggest target for rape and brutality. In fact, it's virtually guaranteed if the crime involves children. If you are convicted of a child related crime, you should probably request protective custody from the outset - this will keep you away from the main body of the prison and will probably save your life.

3. Don't get involved in gambling

This is a sure way to end up dead. This is a no win situation; you either can't afford to pay your gambling bills, or you win and piss off the wrong people. Avoid gambling like the plague in prison. Prisoners will do anything to get what you owe them. Having said that, it is wise to learn a few card games before you enter so you can pass the time playing friendly games.

4. Don't collaborate with guards against other prisoners

Never grass on your fellow prisoners - if it is found out you will enter a whole new world of pain. Having said that, don’t be disrespectful to the guards - they can help to make your time go easily.

5. Don't get indebted to anyone

When you first arrive, other prisoners will offer to lend you things until you get on your feet - cigarettes for example. They will offer you a pack in exchange for two later. Absolutely do not accept this offer, it's a very common trick to get you indebted to someone. If you smoke - quit. You should wait until you've earned your own money before buying things. Basically, the rule is: Never take anything from anyone in prison. This is going to get you killed or seriously hurt.

6. Don’t stare at another prisoner

Always walk with your head facing forwards. All it can take is a stare that lasts one second too long for you to become the target of violence. A bloke might look friendly or placid one minute, but the next he can be your worst enemy.

7. Don't use drugs

Drug use is a guaranteed road to trouble. You will become severely indebted if you become addicted and you run the risk of getting caught by the guards. Drugs are readily accessible and while they may make your time seem less painful, they will almost certainly lead you into big trouble.

8. Work out

Working out not only helps to pass the time, it also helps to to bulk you up - making you less of a target. Don't appear weak - this means walking with your head up - do not look at your feet while you walk. Avoid the temptation to get a tattoo - they often lead to diseases like hepatitis. You'll also regret it once you're out.

9. Keep your mouth shut

Don't tell other prisoners about your private life. Do not discuss your crimes and do not discuss politics or religion. Any type of discussion that can lead to an argument is a big no no. Don’t put your business out onto the street. At the same time, respect other prisoner’s privacy and don’t pry into their private lives.

10. Be respectful and polite

Always be polite and respectful to other prisoners. Respect is the only thing a prisoner has and taking that away can be disastrous. Remember, if you give others your respect, they will most likely return the favour. You absolutely do not want to make enemies in prison.

Last of all, remember that being in prison is like being at war so it's better not to commit a crime in the first place.
